About The University of Alabama at Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System, is the only four-year, public university in the state’s largest metropolitan area. Of the University of Alabama System universities, UAB is the only one with Carnegie’s highest research classification: very high research activity. The physical plant of the University spans more than 80 blocks in the city center with over 250 buildings providing over 13 million feet of assignable space.

UAB is comprised of 11 academic colleges and schools in the health sciences and academic areas. The UAB Health Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health, Health Professions, the Graduate School, and the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences. The University’s academic campus consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Business, Education and Engineering, and the Graduate School. The University has 123 endowed chairs/professorships.

For four decades, this young, dynamic University has thrived on that same boldness and innovation to continue pushing the frontiers in science, medicine, business, education, the arts and the humanities – and has garnered national and international respect. Our faculty have maintained a connection to practice by actively participating in professional associations including the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Alabama Society of CPAs, Institute of Management Accountants, National Association of Black Accountants, The Institute of Internal Auditors, and Association of Fraud Examiners meetings, conferences and workshops.
